Dreams and ambitions

Our story began in 1998 when Lee Flourentzou fulfilled the first step of his long-held dream and purchased a vineyard site in the prestigious region of McLaren Vale.

The Story

Our story began in 1998 when Lee Flourentzou fulfilled the first step of his long-held dream and purchased a vineyard site in the prestigious region of McLaren Vale. Four short years later the first commercial vintage was produced to unimaginable success, with the wines exceeding all expectations and winning a raft of awards and trophies.

With the incredible potential of the unique vineyard site established, Aramis Vineyards has gone on to build a reputation for wines of exceptional quality and a true sense of place. The wines grace the lists of some of Australia’s most exclusive restaurants and bars, and are today in high demand across the world.

The rest is, as they say, yet unwritten…

The Philosophy

Expressing the character and charm of our vineyard site is at the heart of everything we do at Aramis Vineyards. Our desire is to tell the story of our own place in the world – McLaren Vale – our mandate to create the ultimate expression of the region, the ‘first growth’, the best of the best.

We focus on the classic varietals of South Australia, those best suited to our terroir and to the creation of fine, full-bodied red wines – Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon. A combination of meticulous viticulture and traditional, minimal intervention winemaking ensure our wines are given the chance to articulate every nuance of their unique heritage, exuding a true sense of place and their story from vine to bottle.

We thrive on making fine wines that encapsulate the essence of our vineyard.

the vinEyard

We believe our wines are made in the vineyard, not in the winery. We are incredibly fortunate to have become custodians of a vineyard site with a unique terroir, perfectly suited to the production of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The vineyard is positioned on a steep south-facing slope, with vines planted on their own rootstock in a shallow, iron oxide rich loam lying over a semi permeable limestone ridge. Limestone is often exalted as the finest wine-producing soil in the world, providing great drainage yet retaining water for vines when needed. The dry profile around the roots allows our viticulturalist to achieve great balance in canopies and yield – the conditions needed for the creation of top-flight wines.

Located in the far south western corner of McLaren Vale, just two kilometres from the Gulf St Vincent, the vines enjoy the perfect combination of sunny mornings, fresh afternoon sea breezes and brisk evening gully winds from the Adelaide Hills. This enables our fruit to ripen gently, retaining elegance and balance, with a fine line of acidity, allowing the natural earthy character of our vineyard to shine through.

The Winemaking

Winemaker Renae Hirsch brings a finesse and deftness of touch that harness the incredible depth and power of our reds, helping to bring out the natural balance and elegance in the wines.

A minimal intervention approach to winemaking is favoured to showcase the complex, nuanced array of flavours held within the fruit. Wines are produced in a traditional, labour-intensive way via small batch fermentation in open top fermenters before being matured in top quality oak (mainly French with some American) for an extended period of up to 24 months before bottling.

Aramis Vineyards has built a reputation for wines of exceptional quality.
